When installing a new roof, it is essential to plan if you are going for quality or just something to cover your house. With Malarkey shingles, you will be expected to make a larger upfront investment, but with a certified contractor, that roof can last for a lifetime.
That being said, having these shingles is not the best option for everyone. Malarkey roofs are meant to stay. So, if you are following trends for the exterior of your home and decide to change the roofing material in 5 years, this would be a wasted investment.
What is beneficial even in that case is that Malarkey shingles are an asphalt product. This means that they are more or less entirely recyclable, as well as made from recycled materials in the first place.
Practical benefits include the fact that such roofing can be very energy efficient, both for heat and cold, and is incredibly durable. It can also be quite easily painted if you want to have a special tint to your roof and do something different with the exterior design.
If obtained from a Malarkey certified contractor, these shingles will be made from “polymer rubberized asphalt.” The reason why this sounds like the stuff roads are made of is because it is, but it is not the only component.
Generally, Malarkey shingles can be considered composite roofs and have all of the benefits such a roof would have. But, it also has the benefit of it being in shingle form, which means easier maintenance and installation.
The difference between this polymer and regular asphalt used on roads is the laminating layers. The rubber component introduced will make a slightly rubbery but still immensely strong, waterproof material. The rubber means that it will be more or less immune to any blunt damage, such as hail.
Take note that while Malarkey roofs are completely waterproof from the top and bottom, they will take damage if soaked from the sides. In some roofs that are expected to stay in very wet weather, it is possible to introduce a copper element to make the roof antimicrobial.
Otherwise, the best course of action is to have regular maintenance checks and see if water might be pooling somewhere on your roof.
The most obvious benefit of installing Malarkey roofs is the guarantee. If you are using a Malarkey certified contractor, you can opt-in to receive a full guarantee that would include up to 15 years of repairs and maintenance. That’s how certain they are that it won’t be too much work.
For homeowners, this is not just for their peace of mind but also for their budget and insurance. If you can have a 100% guarantee that your roof won’t break, leak, or have other issues for the next decade and a half, you will be able to negotiate a better home insurance deal.
And, the reason for such a guarantee is the durability. The four things that are the bane of any roof are not as impactful for Malarkey roofs. Moisture, frost, sunlight, and impact are all annulled by different components within the shingles.
The strength and firmness is given by the asphalt. Bitumen mixed with mostly volcanic rock since this is from Portland is very close to being indestructible. Asphalt can crumble, but it will not break. The flexibility and moisture resistance is provided by the rubberized filler.
Finally, the sunlight resistance is improved by the coating on the top. This coating will reflect most of the sunlight and prevent both the roof from heating up and the shingles from being damaged in any way by solar radiation.
It is not easy to become a Malarkey-certified contractor. Because of the guarantee provided, the contractor must be licensed, bonded, insured, and experienced. There are even application tests that need to be finished by all operators to get the license.
As for experience, a Malarkey certified contractor will need to have at least five years of business experience. This can be either commercial or residential, but it needs to be strictly roofing experience and not general construction.
This experience will also need to be confirmed as good experience by both the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and the Construction Contractors Board (CCB). This is above having all of the regulation certifications necessary as prescribed by the state.
This is necessary because while installing Malarkey shingles is not in itself particularly labor-demanding, it does require installers and technicians to understand how steep slope roofs work. Such professionals will not allow water pooling and gaps to form.
It is expensive. Depending on the location, time of year, and contractor, installing a Malarkey roof can cost ten times as much as a regular asphalt roof. And while it is durable, it is not ten times more durable.
And, while having Malarkey roofs will increase your property value compared to regular roofs, it will not be as much as a slate roof, which is comparably priced when it comes to materials.
If you have a commercial property, especially one that would benefit from a flat roof, a regular composite roof is a better option. Metal is also preferable for commercial properties because the entirety of the roof can be listed as a reasonable business expense.
For residential properties, there are few where Malarkey roofs would be an outright bad idea. Consistently humid places will cause the material to crumble quicker and maybe even rot. But, places in the US with such climates are very rare and usually don’t force many home aesthetic standards because of the moisture.
The biggest reason why you would want a Malarkey certified contractor to install your roof is the guarantee of durability. Once installed, you are good for at least a decade and probably much more if you regularly clean and maintain your roof.
Compared to other materials, Malarkey roofs don’t break like tiles or get dented like metal roofs, they just bounce back. But they are expensive and should not be installed just to follow a trend.
Still, calling a Malarkey certified contractor is a good idea even if you finally go with a different material, because these roofs require some of the toughest certifications. Such a crew will always be amongst the best roofers you can find.
